Numerical modelling of shear cutting using particle methods

Abstract The use of Advanced High Strength Steel (AHSS) allows for lightweighting sheet steel components, with maintained structural integrity the part. However, AHSS grades show limitations in edge crack resistance, primarily influenced by sheared damage introduced shear cutting process. Numerical modelling process can aid understanding damage, thus avoiding unforeseen cracking subsequent cold forming. extreme deformations blank during are likely to cause numerical instabilities and divergence using conventional Finite Element modelling. To overcome these challenges, this work presents a particle-based method called Particle Method (PFEM). PFEM accurately solves some challenges encountered standard method, such as large deformation, angular distortions, generation new boundaries an efficient way transfer historical information from old mesh, minimising results diffusion. present shows prediction cut morphology scheme, where verified against experiments. With results, authors possibilities obtain accurate process, which promotes further advances damaged related AHSS.
